SENATE KILLS RESIDENCY RULES FOR CITY STAFF

The state Senate passed a bill Tuesday banning city employee residence requirements.

If the House also approves, it would kill an effort by Roanoke City Councilman William White to require top city officials, and a majority of police officers and firefighters, to live in the city.

The Senate bill, sponsored by Richmond Republican Joseph Benedetti, was approved 36-2.

Norfolk and Richmond also are considering requirements that municipal employees live in the city where they work.

Benedetti introduced his Senate bill at the urging of angry Richmond employees. - Staff report
