TEEN FACES CHARGE IN DEATH OF FRIEND

Franklin County teen-ager Michael L. Cooper will be charged with reckless handling of a firearm in the shooting death in early January of his best friend, Commonwealth's Attorney Cliff Hapgood said.

B.J. Clingenpeel, 17, died Jan. 4 after he was shot in the upper chest while playing "quick-draw" in the basement of Cooper's home. Officials said the Waidsboro-area teen-agers were seeing how quickly they could pull pistols out of holsters.

The charge filed against Cooper is a misdemeanor. Hapgood described Clingenpeel's death as a "senseless shooting."

"I'm sure this kid's already paid a penalty in grief and regret and remorse," Hapgood said.
