OBIT CAMDEN, RANDOLPH CLAYTON

CAMDEN, Randolph Clayton, 70, of Buena Vista, died Monday, February 8, 1993 in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was born in Rockbridge County on June 13, 1922, the son of the late Dewey S. Camden and Verlee Claytor Camden. Mr. Camden served as a Gunnery Instructor in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He graduated from Washington & Lee University in 1949 and received his Master's Degree from the University of Virginia in 1956. From 1949 to 1951, Mr. Camden taught at Brownsburg High School, also coaching three sports. From 1951 to 1956, he was Principal of Mountain View Elementary School. From 1956 to 1962, he was Principal of Parry McCluer High School. From 1962 to 1971, he was Principal of Parry McCluer Elementary School. From 1971 to 1982, he was Director of Instruction for Buena Vista Public Schools. Mr. Camden was actively involved in the local sports scene, especially known as the "Voice of the Fighting Blues" football team for 36 years. In addition to his accomplishments in his school work, he found time to perform outstanding service in a number of organizations where he served various offices including Director and President of the Lions Club, member of the American Legion, Treasurer of the Salvation Army, Director of the Mental Health Association, Director of W.V.P.T., public television station for the Shenandoah Valley, a member of the Buena Vista Bicentennial Committee, Deacon and former Chairman of the Board of the Buena Vista Baptist Church, Chairman of the Sunday School, Director of the Baptist Brotherhood, member of the nominating committee and also of the property committee. He always found time in his busy schedule to participate in all Lions Club fund raising activities. He was name Buena Vista's Citizen of the Year in 1975. He is survived by his wife, Irene Fauber Camden, Buena Vista; one son and daughter-in-law, Randolph Clayton Camden Jr. and Rebecca Camden, Richmond; one grandson, Matthew Clayton Camden, Richmond; one sister, Isabelle Sizer, Glasgow; one aunt, Mae Crickenberger, Buena Vista. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday from Buena Vista Baptist Church with Dr. Chip Pendleton officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at their home, 2461 Chestnut Ave. Friends may call at Lomax Funeral Home, Buena Vista. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Buena Vista Lions Club; Buena Vista Baptist Church or Buena Vista Scholarship Fund.
