NS MAY SAVE 300 JOBS IN ATLANTA
City officials said Wednesday that Norfolk Southern Corp.'s decision to house its customer service center in downtown Atlanta could save more than 300 jobs. The Norfolk, Va.-based freight carrier said most of the 400 people the center will employ already are working for the company at its operations center in Atlanta.
Those employees might have lost their jobs if the company had chosen Roanoke, Va., the other site it was considering for the customer service center, officials said.
Roy Cooper, vice president of economic development for the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, said Norfolk Southern's decision, announced Tuesday, is a show of confidence in Atlanta's downtown.
The railroad has about 2,100 employees there. - Associated Press
