TOWN OPPOSES MORE GILES SUPERVISORS ON WATER BOARD

Town Council will recommend against allowing the addition of two Giles County supervisors to the county's Public Service Authority advisory board.

One county supervisor, Chairman Herbert "Hub" Brown, already serves on the PSA board, which also includes one member from each of five towns participating in the countywide water project, Pearisburg, Narrows, Glen Lyn, Rich Creek and Pembroke.

Council made its decision Tuesday night after Councilman Dan Level, the town's representative on the PSA board, said that the general feeling he was getting from the other towns was that they, too, opposed the additional county representation.

"This thing was originally intended to be non-political," he said. "By giving the county even one additional vote, we will be drifting away from that."

Level also said that, to the best of his knowledge, all the other towns with the exception of Pembroke opposed the additional members.

Last month the PSA board approached the county supervisors to ask their assistance in paying for an engineer to oversee the day-to-day operations of the countywide water project. They reasoned that initially he also could oversee the county landfill.

The supervisors agreed to assist on condition that the PSA board amend its bylaws to allow for the additional representation, which would allow one supervisor from each of the county's three districts.

Council members said they might be willing to consider adding one supervisor to the PSA board. They suggested that the county appoint its two at-large members to the board if the supervisors were concerned about unequal representation by district.

On another matter, council has given the nod to Dave Rundgren of the New River Planning District Commission to proceed with his applications for grant money for sewer extension projects.

Two projects, one to extend sewers within the town and another to extend sewer service to Ingram Village, might be eligible for funding through federal community development block grants.

Public hearings on the two projects will be held in the next month.

Council also presented a plaque to John B. Roller, who resigned from council last month, acknowledging its gratitude and appreciation for his 37 years of service to the community.
