SAFETY CLASSES FOCUS ON MINE DISASTERS
Recent mine disasters are being studied in miner retraining classes at Mountain Empire Community College to help illustrate safety procedures and regulations. The school has several instructors with backgrounds in mine rescue and disaster investigation, said Gary Nickles, associate professor of mining in the engineering and industrial technology division. "We can't put a price on the amount of knowledge they bring into the classroom," he said.
"We use faculty who have working knowledge of area mines and who have significant experience," he said. "We also tailor classes to focus on a company's personnel training needs while meeting all training regulations. And we offer classes on all three shifts."
