GRAYSON MAN HELD ON MURDER CHARGE

An Elk Creek man has been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of another Grayson County resident whose body was found in the New River in January.

William Lacy Baldwin, 22, arrested Tuesday night, was held in the Grayson County Jail on Wednesday night in lieu of $250,000 bail, a dispatcher said.

He has been charged with killing Albert Hamilton Sr., 68. Hamilton's body was found weighted down by a cinder block in the river near Buck Dam in Carroll County Jan. 30. He had been shot in the neck and head.

Grayson County Sheriff Herbert McKnight declined comment on a motive for the killing, except to repeat that money and drugs may have played a part.

Three hundred buckets filled with parts of marijuana plants were found at Hamilton's farm in the Comers Rock section of Grayson County. Four guns were pulled from the river near his body.

McKnight said Baldwin and Hamilton knew one another, and lived five to six miles apart.

"There's a lot of circumstantial evidence," McKnight said.

Police said Hamilton had been missing since mid-December, and an autopsy revealed that he had been dead since about that time.

Police also charged Baldwin with use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
