\ Brunswick to sell Marion plant, 4 more

MARION - Defense cuts have forced Brunswick Corp. to sell its five technical group plants, including the one at Marion.

That operation, once the largest employer in Smyth County, now has 670 employees, slightly more than half the number it had two years ago.

Brunswick announced Tuesday its plan to divest itself of its technical group. Bob Potter, human resources director at the Marion plant, said Wednesday it is too soon to know the plant's fate.

"There is no known buyer at this time," he said. "It could be tomorrow; it could be a year or two years from now."

But he said the facility, which makes aircraft raydomes and other military products, has contracts that will keep its work force busy for a year or more.

Plant officials are looking into commercial applications for the items it makes and seeking new customers. Potter was confident that a buyer would be found and the plant would stay. - Southwest bureau
