John C. Kemper, son of Harry L. Kemper and Mary L. Kemper of 2131 Courtland Road, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Kemper is a 1992 graduate of William Fleming High School.

\ AIRMAN RICHARD D. BURKETT, son of Leslie D. Burkett of 2028 Denise Circle, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Burkett is a 1991 graduate of William Byrd High School.

\ NAVY FIREMAN JONATHAN S. FRANCE, son of William O. and Margie B. Looney of Wirtz, recently was named a distinguished graduate from the machinist's mate course at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill..

France is a 1989 graduate of Northside High School.

\ NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT RICHARD A. EARY, son of Edward A. and Debbie Eary of 4652 Golfview Drive, has completed recruit training at Great Lakes, Ill.

Eary is a 1992 graduate of William Fleming High School.

\ NAVY AIRMAN APPRENTICE BRIAN D. JOHNSON, son of David B. and Lesylie S. Johnson of Fincastle, recently participated in the relief effort Operation Restore Hope in Somalia.

Johnson, a 1988 graduate of James River High School, is assigned to Air Anti-Submarine Squadron-38, based at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego. The squadron is part of the USS Ranger battle group.

\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS BRIAN P. SCHENKEL, son of Jerry W. Schenkel and Diane Turner, both of Roanoke, is in the Persian Gulf aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Worden, based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Schenkel's ship has been part of Operation Southern Watch, enforcing a no-fly zone over southern Iraq to protect the Shiite population there.

Schenkel is a 1987 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS JENNIFER K. FRASER, daughter of retired Chief Petty Officer and Mrs. Robert G. Kemble of 7159 Snowberry Circle, recently received the Navy Achievement Medal and was named Sailor of the Quarter.

Fraser, a 1984 graduate of William Fleming High School, was honored for superior performance of duty while serving at the Naval Reserve Center in Tampa, Fla.

\ ALFRED A. WILSON, son of Florine K. Wilson of 1707 Orange Ave. N.W. and Alfred L. Wilson of Danville, was named Outstanding Soldier of the Year for the 2174th Army Garrison.

Garrison competed with more than 250 soldiers for this award. He is a 1985 graduate of Patrick Henry High School and a 1989 graduate of James Madison University.

\ RONALD L. ANDERSON JR., son of Glenna M. Settle of 4636 Pennsylvania Ave., and Ronald L. Anderson Sr. of 2417 Durham St., has been promoted in the Army to private first class.

Anderson, a combat signaler at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., is a 1991 graduate of William Fleming High School.

\ AIRMAN ROBERT B. PUCKETT, son of Janice M. Puckett of Troutville, recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Puckett is a 1992 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

\ STAFF SGT. MILAN A. FUNK, son of Robert and Sandra Funk of Troutville, has graduated from Air Force major command non-commissioned officer academy.

Funk, a fuels supervisor at Royal Air Force Alconbury in Cambridge, England, is a 1980 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

\ ARMY RESERVE PVT. TAMMY S. REYNOLDS, daughter of Marvin P.L. and Edith R. Hash of 2506 Portland Ave. N.W., has completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Reynolds is a 1977 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ PVT. SEAN M. CLINEBELL, son of Kenneth W. and Glenda A. Clinebell of 2107 Sourwood St., has completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Clinebell is a 1992 graduate of William Byrd High School.

\ SENIOR AIRMAN MICHAEL J. SCALES, son of Melvin H. and Arlene S. Jones of 5214 Lancelot Lane, has been named airman of the year.

Scales, a fire protection specialist at Barksdale Air Force Base, Bossier City, La., is a 1989 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ TIMOTHY H. TERRELL, son of Timothy H. and Elizabeth P. Terrell of 2042 Fairhope Road N.W., has been promoted to master sergeant in the Air Force.

Terrell, an electronic computer and switching systems technician at Misawa Air Base, Japan, is a 1974 graduate of Northside High School.

\ NAVY AIRMAN RECRUIT RUSSELL D. HUGGETT, son of Diann M. Huggett of Roanoke, is in the Persian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, based in San Diego.

\ PVT. CHARLES T. DUDLEY, son of Pamela M. Fadorick of 5172 Orchard Hill Drive and Vernon T. Dudley of Ridgeway, has completed basic training at Fort Knox, Ky.

Dudley is a 1992 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

\ SGT. STEVEN V. PULLINS, son of Edward E. and Hazel A. Pullins of 3344 Pittsfield Ave., has re-enlisted in the Army for four years.

Pullins is an aircraft mechanic at Fort Riley, Kan.

Rivers is a 1992 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ NAVY SEAMAN DAVID A. DELONG, a 1990 graduate of William Byrd High School, has been deployed aboard the dock landing ship USS Tortuga to help the Coast Guard intercept Haitians attempting to reach the United States by sea.

The five-ship task force provides temporary emergency assistance at sea, including medical care, shelter and food.

Delong is the son of Jerry W. and Shirley B. Delong of Moneta.

\ NAVY CHIEF PETTY OFFICER DONALD T. WILLIAMS of 7844 Forest Edge Drive S.W. recently received the Navy Achievement Medal.

Williams was cited for superior performance of duty while serving aboard the frigate USS Miller, based in Newport, R.I.

Williams now is assigned to Naval Marine Corps Reserve Center in Roanoke.

\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS DONALD W. PARKER, son of Ada C. Parker of 609 Milton St. N.W., has been deployed aboard the destroyer USS Comte de Grasse, based in Norfolk, to help the Coast Guard intercept Haitians attempting to reach the United States by sea.

The five-ship task force provides temporary emergency assistance at sea, including medical care, shelter and food.

Parker is a 1980 graduate of William Fleming High School.

\ MARINE LANCE CPL. ELAINE J. SELGREN, daughter of Glenn J. and Mary A. Hammerand of 142 Verndale Drive N.E., recently received a certificate of commendation for superior performance of duty while assigned with Headquarters Squadron at Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro, Calif.

\ NAVY SEAMAN JASON T. JAMIESON, son of Tim L. and Ginger V. Jamieson of 4131 Snowbird Circle, has been deployed aboard the destroyer USS Comte de Grasse, based in Norfolk, to help the Coast Guard intercept Haitians attempting to reach the United States by sea.

Jamieson is a 1988 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

\ MARINE PFC. DANNY R. BLEVINS JR., son of Danny and Amy Blevins of Glenvar, recently graduated from basic training at Parris Island, S.C., where he was meritoriously promoted to his present rank.

After he completes four weeks of infantry training at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Blevins will start management school.

Blevins is a 1991 graduate of Glenvar High School.

\ NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT CLYDE V. MUSE, son of Ruth G. Morris of 2917 Lombardy Ave. N.W., recently completed recruit training at Great Lakes, Ill.

Muse is a 1992 graduate of William Fleming High School.
