CAPT. WILLIAM L. HOWARD JR., son of Mr. and Mrs. William L. Howard of 3506 Canter Circle, has graduated from flight school at Fort Rucker in Dothan, Ala.He was the flight commander of his graduating class.
Howard is a 1983 graduate of Cave Spring High School and a 1987 graduate of Longwood College with a degree in management information systems.
\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS JASON W. HALE, son of John W. Hale of 5240 Singing Hills Circle, is in the Persian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, based in San Diego.
The Kitty Hawk has been part of Operation Southern Watch, enforcing a no-fly zone over southern Iraq.
Hale, a 1989 graduate of Cave Spring High School, also served recently off the coast of Somalia with the relief effort Operation Restore Hope.
\ NAVY LT. JAMES P. JOHNSON of 6630 Old Barn Circle S.W. recently received the Navy Achievement Medal.
Johnson was cited for superior performance of duty while serving at the Naval & Marine Corps Reserve Center in Roanoke.
He graduated from Roanoke College in 1981 and a received a master of business administration degree from Virginia Tech in 1989.
\ PVT. CHARLES T. DUDLEY, son of Pamela M. Fadorick of 5172 Orchard Hill Drive and Vernon T. Dudley of Ridgeway, has completed basic training at Fort Knox, Ky.
Dudley is a 1992 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.
\ SGT. STEVEN V. PULLINS, son of Edward E. and Hazel A. Pullins of 3344 Pittsfield Ave., has re-enlisted in the Army for four years.
Pullins is an aircraft mechanic at Fort Riley, Kan.
\ MARINE PVT. PAUL D. FRANKLIN, son of David L. Franklin and Brenda K. Martin, both of Blue Ridge, recently completed recruit training at Parris Island, S.C.
\ NAVY SEAMAN DAVID A. DELONG, a 1990 graduate of William Byrd High School, has been deployed aboard the dock landing ship USS Tortuga to help the Coast Guard intercept Haitians attempting to reach the United States by sea.
The five-ship task force provides temporary emergency assistance at sea, including medical care, shelter and food.
Delong is the son of Jerry W. and Shirley B. Delong of Moneta.
