ROANOKER TO ADVANCE TO STATE ELKS CONTEST

Jamie Walthall of Roanoke will compete in the state Elks Club Hoop Shoot contest at Albermarle High School Feb. 20. She won the 8-9 girls' age class in the recent district contest at Madison Middle School.

Walthall hit 18 of 25 free throws to win in competition with champions from Martinsville, Pulaski, Clifton Forge, Galax, Lynchburg and Danville. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Walthall of 5118 Wipledale Ave. N.W. and is a third-grader at Glen Cove Elementary School.

Roanokers also came home with three second-place trophies and one third-place award.

The hard-luck second-place winner was Philip Wall, who hit 24 of 25 free throws but had to settle for second place when Josh Duffy of Martinsville hit all 25 of his shots. (The 8-9-year-old entrants shoot at a line 4 feet in front of the regular foul line.)

Other Roanoke entries to win second place were Michael Yates in the boys' 12-13 age group and Kimberly Croy of Salem in the girls' 10-11 age group. Brad McFarland won third place in the boys' 10-11 age group.
