VALLEY HAS 5 YOUNG WOMEN COMPETING FOR STATE TITLE

Five Roanoke Valley high school seniors are among the 21 teen-agers competing in the Young Woman of the Year state finals in Roanoke on Friday and Saturday.

The competition will be held at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium at 7:15 both nights.

Kimberly Elizabeth Townsend, Roanoke County's Young Woman of the Year, is the daughter of Philip A. and Sandra Townsend and attends Northside High School. She will perform a piano solo.

Vinton's Young Woman of the Year, Kesha Lyn Thomas, is the daughter of Curtis and Vicki Morris and attends William Byrd High School. She will tap dance.

Salem's Young Woman of the Year is Leslie Janelle Epperly, daughter of Lynwood and Lucy Epperly. She attends Salem High School and will perform jazz dance.

Crystall Gwynn Palmer, daughter of David and Becky Palmer, is North Roanoke's Young Woman of the Year. She attends Northside High School and will perform a piano and vocal solo.

Kelley Suzanne Orr, daughter of Thomas and Carol Orr, is Roanoke's Young Woman of the Year. She attends William Fleming High School and will perform an interpretive dance.

Participants will be judged on academic achievement, interviews, fitness and creative and performing arts. The winner will represent Virginia in national competition in Mobile, Ala., in June.

The winner also will receive a $4,000 scholarship in addition to offers from other colleges.

Five Alabama institutions offer state winners full, four-year scholarships. They are: Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Livingston University in Livington, Troy State University in Troy, Judson College in Marion and Mobile College in Mobile.

In Virginia, Ferrum College, Averett College, Marymount University and Liberty University offer partial scholarships to state winners.

Other contestants are: Amy Lynn Jones, representing Carroll County; Rebecca Michele Ross, Chesapeake; Erin Elizabeth Powell, Prince William County; Gloria Meshell Murphy, Lancaster; Leigh Ann Stone, Martinsville/Henry County; Heather Ann Sorem, Manassas; Kendra Zanea' Hoppe', Isle of Wight; Keira Lyn Smith, Fredricksburg; Consuela Dawn Johnston, Fauquier County; Elizabeth Carmen Barton, Annandale; Kelly Jane Wilkerson, Tri Cities; Kimberly M. Song, Western Fairfax; Danielle Eve Conners, Bedford County; Aimee Millicant Sheppard, Hampton Roads; Tara Anne Perdue, Franklin County; and Laurie Ruthe Captain, Lynchburg.

Tickets will be available at the door starting at 6:30 each night. They are available in advance at the Roanoke Civic Center or at TicketMaster locations.
