ANTARCTICA ADVENTURERS CALL IT QUITS
Frostbitten, exhausted and emaciated, polar explorers Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Dr. Michael Stroud called a halt Thursday night to their record-breaking expedition across Antarctica. They covered 1,350 miles unaided and set two world records since setting out Nov. 9, but were "more dead than alive" late Thursday when they radioed their base camp to request an airlift, organizers said.
Organizers said Fiennes, 48, and Stroud, 37, are suffering frostbite in their extremities; and Fiennes' foot developed a deep, painful infection. Their food supplies, which they dragged along unaided on sleds, have almost run out.
