A car in which Katharine Hepburn was riding was involved in a minor traffic accident while she was heading into Petersburg to stop for the night. No one was injured and no charges were filed in the accident Wednesday evening, police Lt. Melvin Jones said Thursday.
The driver of Hepburn's car, Howard Frederick, told police she was going to Florida. Asked her destination by a reporter, the 85-year-old actress replied, "None of your business."
Hepburn, who has homes in New York and Connecticut, apparently was traveling on Interstate 95 when she decided to stop in Petersburg to spend the night, said Candi Noe, who was working at the High Street Inn when she arrived there.
After getting off the interstate, Hepburn and Frederick's car switched lanes, forcing another vehicle off the road where it hit a pole, according to a police report.
The driver of the other car, Roston W. Beard, said Hepburn offered to write him a check on the spot, but he told her he would rather wait for a damage estimate.
