TIME TO IMPOSE STRONGER SANCTIONS
IT WILL GO down in history as one of the most infamous acts a country has ever ordained against its citizens - the banishment of more than 400 Palestinians to a frigid wasteland without shelter, heat, medicine or facilities. Many of them are professional men such as engineers, doctors and clergymen. The mere thought of these suffering persons elicits revulsion. Israel fails to heed the U.S. Security Council's edict to return the exiles to their homes. Too long has our government allowed itself to be bamboozled by the Israeli lobby.Several years ago, I spent three weeks in Israel. It is a fascinating country. The Israelis are cordial, charming, helpful and kind. It is a shame that they are governed by such intransigent and belligerent politicians. It is long past the time for our government not to let itself be led around, and to insist that Israel cooperates with its allies. Stronger sanctions are in order. ELDON C. GROVER BLUE RIDGE
