RADFORD HIGH ATHLETE CHARGED IN APARTMENT BREAK-IN

A Radford High School basketball player has been charged with breaking and entering and grand larceny.

Christopher A. Hairston, 18, of Ninth Street was charged by city police this week with breaking into an apartment at Bergen Pines on Second Avenue. He also was charged with stealing about $3,000 in items from the apartment, Commonwealth's Attorney Randal Duncan said.

Most of the items have been recovered, Duncan said.

Earlier this month, Hairston was averaging 22.3 points per game, which led the New River District and was fifth best in Timesland.

Radford Principal James "Buddy" Martin said he could not comment on Hairston's status as a student or as a player.
