PALESTINIANS REJECT U.N. DEAL
The Palestinians on Friday dismissed as "totally unacceptable" a U.N.-brokered deal with Israel to begin the repatriation of some 400 Palestinian deportees."We see this whole thing as just a deal in a deal," said Palestinian spokeswoman Hanan Ashrawi. "It has no legitimacy and no substance."
The plan calls for Israel to repatriate 101 of the more than 400 men it deported in December, as a first step toward bringing all of them home.
Ashrawi charged the plan was simply a "rubber-stamping of the American-Israeli deal."
Her comment echoed the Palestine Liberation Organization's representative to the United Nations, M. Nasser al-Kidwa, who called the deal "completely meaningless."
Ashrawi had said earlier Friday that the Palestinians "will be willing to deal with whatever the Security Council decides" on implementing its resolution calling for the immediate return of Palestinians deported by Israel.
She said, however, she was referring to methods the Security Council might employ in carrying out a deal, not to the deal itself.
Ashrawi, whose delegation has held talks through the week with State Department and White House officials, had told reporters that any settlement of the dispute must include a timetable for the Palestinians' return. They were expelled for two years on suspicion of fomenting violence against Israel.
Details of the agreement were sketchy late Friday night, and it was unclear whether a timetable had been set.
