FREE THROWS CARRY LANCERS PAST CAVS TO PIEDMONT TITLE
Laurel Park sank four of six free throws in the last four minutes as it pushed past Fieldale-Collinsville 64-53 to wrap up the Piedmont District boys' basketball title Friday night.The teams were close through three quarters and the Lancers (18-0 overall, 16-0 district) led 44-40 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. At the four-minute mark, Laurel Park turned two steals into a four-point run, forcing the Cavaliers to foul. With free throws, the Lancers stretched their lead to 11 points.
Warrick Scott scored 18 points to lead Laurel Park, the top-ranked Group AA team in The Associated Press' Virginia high school poll. Ronnie Jackson scored 14, Lonzy Robertson had 11 and Chauncey Strange added 10.
Thad Wade scored 20 points to lead Fieldale-Collinsville (13-5, 11-5). Lemuel Jones added 15 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. \

RINGGOLD - Art Wade beat Brian Gunn in the battle of the guards and led his Bassett teammates to the Piedmont District victory in overtime.
Wade scored 36 points, but his free-throw proficiency helped the Bengals (4-14, 4-12) rally from a six-point deficit in the final three minutes of regulation and turn back the Wildcats in overtime.
Wade scored 14 fourth-quarter points, including 7-of-7 free-throw shooting. In the overtime, Bassett made all seven of its free throws, four by Wade.
Wade made 17 of 18 free-throw attempts in the game.
Gunn didn't do badly himself, but it wasn't enough. He had 12 points for Dan River (4-15, 3-13) in the wild fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer that forced overtime. He finished with 31 points. \

MARTINSVILLE - The Bulldogs (14-4, 12-4) raced to a 17-7 first-quarter lead and eased to the Piedmont District victory over the Hawks (4-14, 4-12).
Vincent Eggleston led Martinsville with 16 points, and Maurice Spencer added 14.
Corey Boone paced Gretna with 14, followed by William Merritt with 13.

RIDGEWAY - Two steals by Desean Hairston with under a minute to play saved the Piedmont District victory for Magna Vista.
The Warriors (14-4, 13-3) led by 16 midway through the third quarter, but the Trojans battled back and cut the deficit to 78-77 with 50 seconds remaining.
A steal and two free throws by Hairston put Magna Vista on top 80-77. Hairston stole the ball again and fed Evan Penn for a dunk at the buzzer for the final margin.
Toney Marcus with 24 points and Penn with 17 led the Warriors.
Tunstall (10-9, 8-8) got 29 points from Kris Law and 16 from Hubert Adkins.

CHATHAM - Rodney Williams sank five 3-point shots, three in the Cavaliers' third-quarter spree that led to a Piedmont District victory over the Cougars.
Chatham (7-11, 7-9) led 35-31 at halftime but outscored the Cougars 24-10 in the third quarter behind Williams' shooting, LaVelton Pope's seven points and full-court pressure defense.
Williams finished 5-of-7 from 3-point range and had 17 points to lead the Cavaliers. Pope finished with 13.
Chris Reynolds pumped in a game-high 24 points for Patrick County (4-14, 2-14). \

LEBANON - Aaron Black and Tracy Brown scored all of the Maroons' overtime points as George Wythe handed the Pioneers their first Hogoheegee District loss of the season.
With five seconds left in regulation, George Wythe's Jeffery Bourne was fouled with the Maroons trailing 62-61. He missed the first free throw but made the second to tie the score. However, Lebanon's Aaron Fuller was fouled going for the rebound. With five seconds left and a chance to win it, Fuller missed his only free throw of the night, sending the game to overtime.
Fuller, who was 7-of-8 on free throws and finished with a team-high 21 points, had made two free throws with 16 seconds left in regulation that put the Pioneers up by one.
In the overtime, Black and Brown took over for George Wythe (12-7, 9-3). Brown finished with 22, four in the overtime; Black had 18, five in the overtime. Mike Cook added 12 for the Maroons.
For Lebanon, (14-3, 12-1), Brian Summers scored 16 points, Ben Campbell 15 and Brian Sword 12. \

EMORY - Five players scored in double figures as the Rebels (7-10, 4-8) upset the Warriors (11-7, 7-6) in a Hogoheegee District game.
John Hess led the way with 12 points, followed by Steven White with 11. Gus Wild had 10 points and 15 rebounds.
D.J. Preston had a game-high 15 points for Chilhowie, and Craig Mason added 14. \

MARION - Adrian Sensabaugh scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the second half as the Bearcats (12-6, 8-1) beat the Scarlet Hurricane to clinch the Highlands District regular-season championship.
Marion (8-11, 3-6) was led by Brian Cregger's 10 points. \

LYNCHBURG - Preston Snell had 34 points to help the Gaels hand the Tigers their first Virginia Independent Conference loss of the season.
It was the third straight 30-point effort for Snell, a Radford native.
Luke Lesniak added 19, Brian Lightner 17 and David Ashwell 12 for Holy Cross (18-7, 10-3).
Nathan Tasso scored 25, including seven 3-pointers, to lead Hargrave. Rod Cobb added 23, Marco Sloan 14 and Inus Norville 11. \

BUCHANAN - Three-pointers kept the Indians in the game for a while, but the Knights prevailed in a non-district game, the last of the season at home for the James River seniors.
Donnie Costigan put in eight 3-pointers and finished with 26 points for Covington Boys' Home (13-8). George Wood had 17 points and Chris Hicks added 13.
Senior David Johnson led James River with 19 points, senior Romond Waldron had 18 points, senior Jody Steger had 11 points and 12 rebounds, senior Troy Thompson had 12 points and eight assists. The Knights' other two seniors are Anthony Christian and Lee Johnson, who had two and four points, respectively. Lloyd Moore had 16 points and 11 rebounds. \
