RAIDERS CLOSE TO VIC BOYS' TITLE

North Cross put itself in position to win the Virginia Independent Conference regular-season boys' basketball championship Friday night, defeating host Lynchburg Christian 70-56 at Liberty University.

Tyler Pugh hit two 3-point goals to break a 37-37 tie as the Raiders outscored the Bulldogs 24-11 in the third quarter on the way to the victory.

Coupled with Holy Cross' upset of Hargrave Military, the victory leaves the Raiders (18-5 overall, 11-1 district) tied with the Tigers atop the VIC standings. The Raiders and Hargrave close conference play Monday at North Cross.

North Cross got balanced scoring, with Mike Bryan pumping through 16 points and guard Marcus Cardwell and forward Montrice Smith added 14 apiece.

Lynchburg Christian (7-12, 5-7) was led by Gabe Lyons with a game-high 19 points. \

Timberlake Christian 56

Roanoke Catholic 42

Marty Chandler scored 15 points as visiting Timberlake Christian handed the Celtics their 11th Virginia Independent Conference defeat.

Travis Stickle scored 11 points and Tommy Middleton added 10 to pace Timberlake Christian (13-10, 5-9).

Greg Broderick scored 16 points and Mike Kolnok had 12 to lead Roanoke Catholic (4-22, 2-11). \

Alleghany 82

Lord Botetourt 65

COVINGTON - The host Mountaineers maintained a share of the Blue Ridge District lead with Salem after cruising past the Cavaliers.

Alleghany (16-2, 6-2) hit five of its six 3-pointers in the first half as the Mountaineers built a 41-24 halftime lead. Lord Botetourt (6-12, 1-7) never recovered.

Five Mountaineers scored in double figures, led by Michael Hunter with 20 points. Todd Wheatley pulled down 17 rebounds to go with his 16 points.

Lord Botetourt got 18 points from Shannon Williams. \

Patrick Henry 46

Cave Spring 44

Shannon Taylor's tap-in at the buzzer gave the Patriots the Roanoke Valley District victory over the visiting Knights.

Taylor scored nine of his game-high 13 points in the fourth quarter as Patrick Henry (3-15, 2-5) held off a furious Cave Spring rally. The Knights (5-14, 0-7) missed three baskets and four free throws in the final 30 seconds.

Steve Kagey with 12 points and Matt Matheny with 11 led the Knights.

Covington Boys' Home 67

BUCHANAN - Three-pointers kept the Indians in contention for a while, but the Knights prevailed in a non-district game, the last of the season at home for the James River seniors.

Donnie Costigan put in eight 3-pointers and finished with 26 points for Covington Boys' Home (13-8).

Senior David Johnson led James River with 19 points, senior Romond Waldron had 18 points, senior Jody Steger had 11 points and 12 rebounds, senior Troy Thompson had 12 points and eight assists. The Knights' other two seniors are Anthony Christian and Lee Johnson, who had two and four points, respectively. Lloyd Moore had 16 points and 11 rebounds. \

Roanoke Valley Christian 68

Grace Christian 46

Sam Donnelly scored 15 points as the Eagles flew past visiting Grace Christian to win their homecoming game.

Aaron Hassell and Brad Suhr scored 11 apiece to pace Roanoke Valley Christian (7-10). Hassell grabbed 12 rebounds.

Joel Knopp scored 14 and Darren Hinkle added 13 to lead Grace Christian (7-8) in the non-district game. \

Girls

Cave Spring 105

Patrick Henry 41

Kim Stewart scored the 1,000th point of her career and the host Knights (18-2, 10-0) clinched at least a tie for the Roanoke Valley District title by rolling over the Patriots (1-18, 0-11).

Cave Spring needs to win either of its final two RVD games to secure the title. The Knights play at second-place Pulaski County on Monday and at William Fleming next Friday.

Stewart, a senior point guard, hit the 1,000 milestone in the fourth quarter, and she finished with 16 points and six assists. Amy Athey led Cave Spring with 24 points and eight rebounds. Kelly Dierker had 11 points and 13 rebounds, and Aimee Beightol had 12 points.

Cave Spring took command early, holding PH to four first-quarter points and leading 46-21 at halftime. The Knights' sealed the victory with a 34-6 third quarter in which Sallie Cadwell scored eight of her 15 points and Chrystal Rhodes had six of her eight.

Elisha Jones' 14 points led Patrick Henry, and Caroline Mays added 12.

Franklin County 40

ROCKY MOUNT - Marqueetta Randolph sparked a 13-0 run to start the third quarter and the visiting Colonels rallied from a halftime deficit to beat the Eagles in a RVD game.

Franklin County (10-8, 3-7) led 21-18 at halftime, using a 1-2-1-1 zone to keep the Colonels away from the basket and to hold Randolph to six points.

After Fleming (11-6, 5-5) scored the first basket of the third quarter, Franklin County then turned over the ball on five consecutive possessions to fuel the Colonels' spurt. Randolph had eight points in the run and 14 of her game-high 22 in the quarter.

Shannon Conley paced Franklin County with nine points. \

Roanoke Catholic 53

Timberlake Christian 38

Abby Dickson scored a career-high 29 points and had 14 rebounds as the Celtics (17-3, 11-2) dominated Timberlake in a Blue Ridge Conference game.

Dickson, a sophomore center averaging 8.9 points before Friday night, hit 14 of his 23 field-goal attempts. She was left free in the middle when Timberlake started out in a box-and-one defense against the Celtics' usual leading scorer, Jackie Hinman, who finished with 13 points.

Roanoke Catholic outrebounded Timberlake 52-24, and its running game helped build a 49-25 lead after three quarters.

Catholic's next assignment will be a first-round home game against either Timberlake (7-12, 4-8) or Stuart Hall in the Blue Ridge Conference Tournament on Tuesday night. Semifinals will be next Friday night at Carlisle School in Martinsville, with the final on Saturday. \

Grace Christian Academy 63

Roanoke Valley Christian 55

Point guard Grace Morrison scored 12 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter that helped the visiting Warriors pull away from the Eagles in a non-conference game.

Sarah Hochstetler added 10 for Grace Christian (17-1).

Brandi Surkamer led Roanoke Valley Christian (10-10) with 22 points. She was 12-of-18 on free throws. \

Thursday's game

\ E.C. Glass 65, Patrick Henry 39: At Lynchburg, Melanie Glass scored 23 points as the Hilltoppers (11-7) outscored Patrick Henry in every quarter of a non-district girls' game. Elisha Jones led the Patriots (1-17) with 14.
