CREATIVE WRITING CLASS STARTS MARCH 8

An eight-week creative writing class and workshop for adults will be taught at Blue Ridge Books starting March 8.

Liza Field, the instructor, has taught creative writing and literature at the University of Michigan, Virginia Western Community College and Southwestern College in Kansas. Her work has been published in 10 journals and anthologies and aired on public radio.

The classes on fiction are scheduled to meet Mondays, 6:30-8 p.m. They could be shifted to Sundays at 4 p.m., depending on the preference of participants at the first meeting March 8.

The cost is $65 for those who register by Feb. 20 and $50 for those under 21 or who are members of the American Association of Retired Persons. Registration after Feb. 20 will be $70. Some scholarship help is available, based on need.

People can register or get further information by calling Blue Ridge Books at 228-8303.

Students will need a notebook or journal, access to a typewriter or word processor, and a willingness to write at least 15 to 30 minutes a day. "Courage and recklessness are required," Field said.

She said she is particularly interested in teaching those who would like to write but feel they lack the talent or education.

"I've found in teaching that people who don't consider themselves especially gifted often produce more real, alive, original work than a number of professional writers," she said.

"The most vivid writing often comes from those with hands-on experience in farming, child-rearing, fishing, weather, the details of daily living. Good living inspires good writing, not vice versa."
