SOUTHERN MISS STEALS 1 FROM VIRGINIA TECH 89-80

Despite a career-high 27 points from Virginia Tech's Christi Osborne, Southern Miss won the teams' Metro Conference basketball game 89-80 Saturday.

The Hokies (15-5 overall, 5-2 Metro) hit a school-record 12 3-pointers on 20 attempts, but the Eagles (14-6, 5-2) countered with 21 steals. Tech shot 84 percent in the first half, only to trail 44-40 because of 18 turnovers. Tech's Sue Logsdon added a season-high 17 points.

The Hokies cut the lead, which had been 18 points in the second half, to 72-66 on Jenny Root's three-point play, but Tech could get no closer. \

No. 14 Virginia 97

Duke 61

DURHAM, N.C. - Heather Burge and Wendy Palmer scored 16 points each to pace the Cavaliers to an Atlantic Coast Conference victory over the Blue Devils.

Virginia (17-5, 9-3) led 41-25 at halftime as both teams shot poorly. The Cavaliers hit 36.8 percent of their field-goal attempts while Duke (10-11, 1-10) hit 32.4 percent.

Virginia improved to 61 percent in the second half, hitting 22 of 36 shots. Duke continued at a 33 percent pace.

Carey Kauffman led Duke with 17 points and 13 rebounds. \

Roanoke 70

Lynchburg 54

After shooting poorly in the first half, the Maroons (16-5, 12-4) turned on the defensive pressure and rallied for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the Hornets (3-16, 2-15) at Bast Center in Salem.

The score was 25-25 at halftime, with the Maroons shooting 28.6 percent (10-of-35), compared with Lynchburg's 44.4 percent (12-of-27).

After Lynchburg scored the first basket of the second half for a 27-25 lead, Roanoke reeled off 12 points, including an eight-point run by Debbie Puch that made it 37-27 with 15:51 left. Puch finished with 16 points, including two 3-pointers, which she sank during the scoring spurt.

FERRUM - Karen Barefoot scored 23 points and Kinsey Pritchett added 18 as the Captains (15-8, 6-3) topped the Panthers (9-13, 3-5) in a Dixie Conference game. \

Radford 68

Towson State 60

RADFORD - Tammie Crown and Shannan Wilkey each scored 14 points and LaSaundra Siddle added 13 as the Highlanders (11-8, 9-2) defeated the Tigers (7-15, 6-6) in a Big South game.

Radford, which won its ninth straight conference game, had a huge advantage at the free-throw line, making 25 of 33 to Towson State's 13 of 21. That offset Towson State's 41-38 rebounding advantage.

Caprice Hightower scored a game-high 17 points before fouling out with 20 seconds left. Megan Gebbia added 15 and Shannon Ward 14. \

Hollins 63

Eastern Mennonite 55

Serena Beedie had 18 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and six steals as Hollins (12-10, 8-8) defeated ODAC opponent Eastern Mennonite. Becca Nissley led Eastern Mennonite (7-14, 4-12) with 25 points. \
