FRUSTRATED BIOSPHERE COMMITTEE RESIGNS

A special, independent committee of scientists set up to help oversee the Biosphere II "space habitat" experiment in Arizona has resigned, frustrated by lack of cooperation, members said Saturday.

The 10 scientists, who oversaw the scientific integrity of the two-year Biosphere II experiment, resigned Feb. 5, said one member who asked not to be identified.

"They [the operators of Biosphere II] weren't listening to us," the member said.

The committee chairman, Tom Lovejoy, assistant secretary for external affairs at the Smithsonian, confirmed the resignations.

Other members of the committee could not be reached for comment. The operators of the project did not respond to repeated calls.

The glass-enclosed structure covering 3.15 acres cost an estimated $150 million. Four men and four women have lived inside it since Sept. 26, 1991.
