TEACHING STUDENT GETS CALL FROM FIRST LADY
Karen Lewis thought the late afternoon phone call would be about substitute teaching. Instead, it was first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.Lewis, a senior majoring in elementary education at Virginia Wesleyan College, and Clinton talked for about 10 minutes Wednesday. The call was about a book Lewis had sent to then President-elect Clinton in November.
The book, "Savage Inequalities," is about differences between rich and poor public schools.
She read the book last year for one of her classes and recommended it to the president. He didn't read it, but his wife did and called.
"I'd like to thank you again," Clinton said as the conversation ended. "I wanted to let you know I did read it and we're hoping we can work for a change."
