SALEM WINS BLUE RIDGE TOURNEY

Shannon Harrison of Salem was selected player of the year and her coach, David Turk, was named coach of the year as her team captured the Blue Ridge District volleyball tournament in Lexington.

In the semifinals, the Spartans defeated host Rockbridge County 15-5, 15-8 and third-seeded William Byrd upset second-seeded Lord Botetourt 15-12, 12-15, 15-4. Regular-season champion Salem defeated the Terriers 15-9, 15-12 in the championship match.

The Spartans and runner-up Terriers will advance to the Region III tournament Friday at Jefferson Forest. Salem faces either Rustburg or Gretna and William Byrd takes on Bassett, with the winner facing Jefferson Forest.

Named to the all-district first team were Molly McCorkle and Shannon Gartland of Lord Botetourt, Amy Atkins of Salem, and Sheri King and Cathy Smith of William Byrd.

Regular-season champion Jefferson Forest defeated Rustburg 15-8, 15-6 for the Seminole District title at Forest. In the semifinals, Jefferson Forest beat Altavista 15-3, 13-15, 15-2 and Rustburg advanced by defeating Nelson County 15-5, 15-10. Lynelle Slade of Jefferson Forest was named player of the year and her coach, Phyllis Buckner, was named the top coach. Jefferson Forest and Rustburg will advance to the Region III tournament Friday at Forest.

Regular-season champion Glenvar won the Pioneer District title at Glenvar High School. In the semifinals, the Highlanders defeated Bath County 15-3, 15-10 and James River beat Parry McCluer 5-15, 15-3, 15-6. Glenvar defeated the Knights 15-13, 15-11 in the final. The Highlanders and James River advance to the Region C tournament next Saturday in Wytheville.
