TEACHER OF THE WEEK

If you're doodling or drawing while Vicky Cox is teaching, you won't get in trouble. Cox, who teaches kindergarten through third-grade pupils with learning disabilities, says children have different styles of learning, and she respects that.

"Some children need to doodle in class, and they can still listen," she said. "We can't make our children all the same. They all bloom differently."

Cox said the children she teaches at her Vinton school are not disabled, they just learn differently. She finds her job gratifying because, "It's nice to see children who have difficulty feel good about themselves," she said.

"Mrs. Cox takes times with me and makes me feel special. When she tells my mommy about my improvements, she gets tears in her eyes. She is really proud of me," said the pupil who nominated her.

Cox, who has always taught learning disabilities during her 14 years as a teacher, is married and enjoys reading and crafts.

If you have a nomination for Teacher of the Week, send the name of the nominee, his or her school and why you think that teacher should be honored. Include your name, telephone number and school and send to NewsFun, P.O. Box 2491, Roanoke 24010-2491.
