WIFE SAYS HUSBAND RAPED AND BEAT HER

A Northeast Roanoke woman says she was raped and beaten by her husband on Valentine's Day while a friend of her husband watched television in the same room.

Roanoke police Monday said they were called to the woman's house about 1:40 a.m. Sunday.

She told police that her husband had not been home for two days and had come in, dragged her from her bed and attacked her.

She said the man beat her face into a wall and then raped her while his friend continued watching television.

The woman told police that the other man did not intercede, except to tell the husband that "he was crazy."

After the husband left in her truck, the other man said, "Maybe we ought to call 911," the woman told police.

When police arrived, the woman had a gash over her left eye, which had swollen shut. Her face was swollen and covered with blood.

She was taken to Community Hospital for treatment.

Police found the woman's truck wrecked about a block away. The truck apparently had gone airborne and crashed into an embankment in Thrasher Park.

The husband, whose identity was not released in order to protect the identity of his wife, was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Police said he was in serious but stable condition.

The man suffered a compound fracture of his arm and some internal injuries.

Sunday's allegation follows a report of another marital rape last week.

A 25-year-old Northwest Roanoke woman said she was raped Wednesday morning by her husband after she refused to have sex with him because of his drug use and extramarital affairs.

No arrests had been made in either case by Monday afternoon, police said.
