VANDALS TORCH, TRASH VA. BEACH SCHOOL

Vandals torched the main office, trashed classrooms and ripped up a science lab at Virginia Beach Middle School over the weekend.

Damage initially was estimated at $250,000, but fire and school officials said the final cost could go much higher.

The school will reopen today, officials said. But it will likely be a month before the office is repaired.

"The main office was 90 percent gutted," said Andrew T. Carrington, assistant superintendent of schools.

A woman who lives across the street said she heard breaking glass and saw youngsters running from the area late Saturday. - Associated Press
