OBIT ROBBINS, MAE IRENE OSBORNE
ROBBINS, Mae Irene Osborne, 104, of Columbus, Ohio, and formerly of the
Bridle Creek Community near Independence, Va., passed away Thursday, February
11, 1993, at Whetstone Care Center, Columbus, Ohio. Mrs. Robbins had resided
in Columbus, Ohio, for 60 years, and was the widow of Walter Robbins. She was
born December 22, 1888, in Independence, Va., the daughter of the late
Zachariah and Mary Cox Osborne. She graduated from Bridle Creek Academy in
1902, attended Sullins College from 1904 to 1905, and taught school in a
one-room school house in the Mouth of Wilson, Va., and Grassy Creek, N.C.,
areas. Mrs. Robbins was postmistress at Grassy Creek, N.C., from 1920 to 1926,
and worked in consumer sales in Columbus, Ohio, from 1926 to 1966. She was
also a talented artist, concentrating in water colors, an excellent
horsewoman, and a "sure" shot with both rifle and pistol. She acted as tutor
and governess, teaching all five subjects, for five children of Emmet Osborne,
who lived in a remote area between Independence and Galax. Surviving are her
son, Col. Harold W. Robbins, Redlands, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Mary
Irene Gagos of San Diego, Calif., John E. Robbins of San Luis Obispo, Calif.,
James D. Robbins of Santa Barbara, Calif., Richard W. Robbins of Port Land,
Ore. Six great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted
11 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 1993, in Bridle Creek United Methodist Church
with the Rev. Ron Rhodes officiating. Interment will follow in Bridle Creek
Cemetery. The body will remain at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home until 30
minutes prior to service time when it will be taken to the church to lie in
state. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 until
8 p.m. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va., is in charge of the
arrangements.
