VIKINGS PULL AWAY FROM ALLEGHANY
Northside nailed 10 of 13 free throws in the final 1:34 to pull away for a 70-65 Blue Ridge District boys' basketball victory over visiting Alleghany on Tuesday night, plunging both teams into a two-way tie for second place.Jimmy Porter scored 17 points, Kelly Dampeer had 15, and Walt Derey added 12 for the Vikings (16-4 overall, 6-3 in the district). Alleghany (16-3, 6-3) was paced by Todd Wheatley with 25 points.

LEXINGTON - Josh Pugh, Nathan Routt and Mark Byington combined for 65 points in leading the Spartans past the Wildcats in a Blue Ridge District game.
Combined with Alleghany's 70-65 loss at Northside, the victory enabled Salem (15-3 overall, 7-2 Blue Ridge), ranked fifth in the latest Group AA poll, to clinch at least a tie for the district's regular-season title. Salem leads both Alleghany and Northside by one game with one league contest to go.
Pugh had 25 points, Routt 22 and Byington 18 as the Spartans' attack proved to be too much for the Wildcats (8-11, 1-7).
Scoring easy baskets at will off its pressure defense, Salem erupted for 35 points in the second quarter to take command at 59-32.
Mark Mayerchek had 22 points and Marty Early 17 for Rockbridge. SALEM (104)

ABINGDON - D.J. Preston scored 13 points - two on free throws with 14 seconds left - as the Warriors won the non-district contest with the Falcons.
Chilhowie controlled the first half, leading 22-14 at halftime. Abingdon (11-9) rallied in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 20-5, but Chilhowie bounced back with a 21-13 rally of its own. Abingdon led by a point when Preston was fouled. He sank both free throws for the win. CHILHOWIE (48)

RURAL RETREAT - The Rebels (8-10, 5-8) outscored the Indians 25-7 in the second quarter, then held on for a Hogoheegee District victory.
Patrick Henry-Glade Spring led 38-17 at the half, but Rural Retreat (3-16, 2-12) chipped away and got to 60-56 with 1:30 left. John Hess then nailed a 3-pointer for the Rebels, forcing Rural Retreat to foul down the stretch.
