TOWN HOUSE PROPOSAL TO BE LOOKED AT TONIGHT

A rezoning request to clear the way for the construction of about 175 town houses near the mid-county landfill tops the Montgomery County Planning Commission's agenda tonight.

Whitethorn Plantations Inc., whose vice president is Blacksburg businessman William Matthews, has asked that a 25-acre parcel be rezoned from an agricultural to a multifamily residential zone.

Whitethorn also is seeking a special-use permit for the construction of town houses on the property, which lies south of a county recreation park and between the county landfill and the proposed U.S. 460 bypass, known as Alternate 3A.

The property is at the rear of the old Virginia Tech horticulture farm near the end of Arbor Drive, which intersects with U.S. 460 at The Market Place's Hardee's restaurant.

Prior to construction of the bypass, property access would be provided by a temporary extension of Arbor Drive.

The property would be served by water and sewer lines from the town of Christiansburg. The county's comprehensive plan designates the property as residential.

Also scheduled on tonight's commission agenda is a report from county extension agent Joe Hunnings on the county's water testing program and updates on the county's water and sewer study and open-space planning.

The Planning Commission meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the third-floor courtroom of the county courthouse in Christiansburg.
