AUBURN NIPS EAGLES 64-62

Andy Johnson scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Auburn slipped past Floyd County 64-62 in a Mountain Empire District boys' basketball game Tuesday night.

The Eagles, trailing 41-28 in the third quarter, rallied to tie with 3:04 left and a driving layup by John Reed put Auburn ahead 64-62. The Buffaloes had one last possession but threw the ball away.

Terry Millirons helped Auburn (12-7 overall, 10-6 Mountain Empire) with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Reed scored 11 points and V.J. Lumia pulled down 12 rebounds.

Jason Light scored 31 points to lead Floyd County (13-6, 13-4). FLOYD

Giles 54 Bland 39

PEARISBURG - The Spartans made 17 of 26 free throws and pulled away from the Rockets in the third quarter for a Mountain Empire District win.

Giles lost to Bland by one point earlier this season after shooting 3-of-21 from the free-throw line. Timmy Williams led Giles (7-11, 6-10) with 12 points. Kevin King had 12 for the Rockets (9-9, 7-9).

Grayson County 50 Narrows 46

INDEPENDENCE - The Blue Devils took the lead at 42-39 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Mike Brown with 4:06 left and made enough free throws to hold off the Green Wave in the Mountain Empire District.

Grayson County, led by Shane Griffith's 14 points, trailed by six going into the fourth. The district-leading Blue Devils (15-4, 14-2) made five of 10 free-throw attempts in the fourth.

Chad Fleeman had 15 to lead Narrows (7-12, 6-11).

Galax 75 Shawsville 51

GALAX - Junior Kevin Hutchens had 17 points and nine rebounds in his first career start to lead the Maroon Tide to a Mountain Empire District win over the Shawnees.

Jeff Spells added 10 for Galax (13-5, 12-4), which pulled away by outscoring the Shawnees 20-8 in the third quarter.

Darrell Bibb scored 27 points and Keith Martin had 19 for Shawsville (2-18, 1-16).

Fort Chiswell 58 Rocky Gap 51 ROCKY GAP - Steve Widner scored 18 points and B.W. Hill had 13 as the Pioneers handed the Eagles their 16th loss in a Mountain Empire matchup.

Fort Chiswell (14-5, 12-5) led 40-36 after three quarters. Rocky Gap kept the game close in the last quarter but couldn't overcome two turnovers in the final minutes and a foul on a three-point play.

Eric Faulkner led the Eagles (1-16, 1-15) with 17 points and seven steals.

Carroll County 57 Radford 52

RADFORD - Stephen Dalton scored 13 points to help the Cavaliers edge the Bobcats in the New River District.

John Wolford added 12 points and Jason Kilbourne 10 for the Cavaliers (6-14, 2-3), who led 27-20 at halftime. Jason Leonard finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Garrett Jones led the Bobcats (7-13, 2-3) with 24 points.

The teams are tied for second place in the district.

Amherst County 74 Liberty 67

AMHERST - Justin Johannes scored 14 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter as the Lancers turned back a rally by the Minutemen to win the Seminole District game.

The victory put Amherst (16-3, 16-3) a half-game ahead of idle Altavista in the district standings heading into the final games of the season.

Amherst led 62-48 with 5:30 to play when Liberty started its comeback with a barrage of 3-point shots. The Minutemen, led by Greg Reynolds' three, made seven 3-pointers in cutting their deficit to five points, but it got no closer.

Reynolds and Greg Richie led Liberty (9-10, 9-10) with 13 points apiece.

Brookville 55 Staunton River 43

MONETA - Gary Blankenship had 16 points, five in a key stretch in the fourth quarter, as the Bees won the Seminole District game over the Golden Eagles.

Staunton River played without Eric Flood, averaging 17.4 points per game, who aggravated tendinitis in a foot early in the first quarter and could not continue.

The Bees led 40-39 in the fourth quarter when Blankenship made a 3-pointer, then stole Staunton River's inbounds pass, was fouled and made two free throws to give Brookville a six-point lead. The Golden Eagles (9-10, 9-10) didn't threaten again.

C.E. Rhodes helped Brookville (13-6, 13-6) with 11 points. Geoff Zimmerman had 12 and Cornelius Fox 10 for Staunton River.

Jefferson Forest 52 Rustburg 30

RUSTBURG - Bryan Jennings scored 18 points as the Cavaliers (11-8, 11-8) ripped cold-shooting Rustburg in a Seminole District game.

Jefferson Forest's half-court man-to-man defense held Rustburg (1-18, 1-18) to eight points in the first half.

Graham 75 Christiansburg 40

BLUEFIelD - Jay Gray had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the G-Men's non-district rout.

Cornell Cooke added 12 points with 11 rebounds, Stephen Neal scored 12 points and Fred Adams had 11 for Graham (10-10). David Powers led the Demons (2-18) with 10 points.

Laurel Park 74 Gretna 53

MARTINSVILLE - Carlos Cooke scored 21 points to lead four players in double figures as the Lancers cruised to their 19th straight win. Lonzey Robertson and Ronnie Jackson scored 13 each and Warwick Scott had 10 for Laurel Park (19-0, 17-0), which clinched the Piedmont District title last week. Rodney Irvin and Corey Boone had 10 points each for the Hawks (4-15, 4-13). GRETNA (53)
