GOFF NAMED HEAD GOLF PRO AT COUNTRYSIDE

Monty Goff, who six months ago resigned from his assistant professional's job at Countryside, has been named the new head professional at the golf course in Northwest Roanoke.

Goff, who started his job Monday, succeeds Billy McBride, who resigned in December to take the head pro's position at Hanging Rock Golf Club.

Goff, 31, served as an assistant under McBride for four years before leaving Countryside in mid-August in pursuit of a head pro's position. Goff was among the finalists for head posts at Botetourt Country Club and Hanging Rock, but failed to land either job.

"I started wondering what it was going to take to find something in the Roanoke Valley," Goff said. "I had started looking elsewhere when this opportunity came along.

"The membership here likes me. So it made it a logical choice when you sat down and thought about it. The transition will be relatively easy since I've been here before. The only transition I will have to make is going from everybody's buddy to boss."

Goff said Kirk Fedor and Marshall Langheimer will be retained as assistant pros.

Goff also will oversee the swimming and tennis facilities at the club, which is owned by the Northern Virginia-based Fairways Group Inc.
