ETC. TWO HOKIES NAMED TO ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Virginia Tech football players Rusty Pendleton and Jim Pyne were selected Tuesday to the Big East Football Conference's all-academic team.To qualify, a player must have a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average over at least two full semesters.
Pendleton, who has completed his eligibility at Tech, is an aerospace engineering major. Pyne, who will be a senior next year, is a marketing major. Richlands native Mike Compton of West Virginia, a health and physical education major, also made the team.
Syracuse led all Big East schools with seven all-academic members. Temple had five, WVU and Pittsburgh four, Miami and Rutgers three and Boston College none.
Virginia's Heather Burge and Dena Evans joined Virginia Tech's Christi Osborne on the GTE District III Academic All-America women's basketball team in the university division. Osborne, an early childhood development major, has a 3.88 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale and had a 4.0 for the fall semester.
Blacksburg defeated Christiansburg 15-5, 15-2 in the championship of the New River volleyball tournament. Both teams advance to the Region IV tournament Saturday at Gate City.
