BLACKS' CIVIL WAR ROLE IS TALK TOPIC
"Black Soldiers in the Civil War" is the topic of a Thursday lecture by historian Joseph T. Glatthaar at Virginia Tech. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in Squires Student Center's Haymarket Theatre.Glatthaar is recognized as the country's leading authority on black Civil War soldiers. The author of several articles and books on the subject, his "Forged in Battle: The Civil War Alliance of Black Soldiers and White Officers" received the 1992 Distinguished Book Award from the Society for Military History. He currently serves as chairman of the history department at the University of Houston.
Glatthaar also will speak at the second annual Civil War Weekend at Virginia Tech Friday and Saturday.
Thursday's lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in the Squires Black Cultural Center.
