HOKIES SUSPEND 2 VETERANS

Virginia Tech's basketball team will face East Carolina tonight without senior forward Thomas Elliott and junior center Jimmy Carruth, who will serve a one-game suspension for staying out too late in Tampa, Fla., last Friday.

Hokies coach Bill Foster said Wednesday that Elliott and Carruth broke the team's midnight curfew the night before Tech was routed by South Florida. Tech's assistant coaches knew of the transgression before the game but didn't tell Foster.

"They knew I'd go through the top of the hotel," Foster said. "Had I known, they'd have sat for that game."

He found out after the game and decided Tuesday that Carruth and Elliott would stay in Blacksburg while the team goes to Greenville, N.C. Foster said the pair would play next Monday at Virginia Commonwealth.

"It's very disappointing," Foster said.

Elliott, 6 feet 7, is the Hokies' top scorer with 11.9 points per game and top rebounder with 6.1 per game. Carruth, 6-10, has started 12 of 20 games and averages 4.1 points and 3.8 rebounds. Their absence means Tech may have to play walk-on forward Andrew Zarechnak.

Neither Elliott nor Carruth returned telephone messages Wednesday.
