GE agrees to dim its light-bulb claims

The Federal Trade Commission has reached an agreement with General Electric, effective Jan. 29, in which GE promises to tone down its claims that its light bulbs are good for the environment.

The bulbs, the FTC found, use less energy than GE's standard bulbs, but only because they give off less light. For example, the Energy Choice light advertised as "replacing" a 100-watt bulb actually has only 90 watts. The number 100 is printed in large numbers on the box, with 90 less prominent underneath.

A GE spokesman said the company since early January has been producing new packages in compliance with the FTC agreement, proposed in November. The new packages show the actual wattage of the bulb in large print, with smaller lines saying "provides nearly the same light as 100 watt." - Washington Post

Label in mouth spurs baby-shoe recall

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A Pennsylvania infant who ripped a Keds label from his shoe and popped it in his mouth prompted the recall of 20,000 pairs of the sneakers for young children.

The Stride Rite Corp., maker of Keds, said Wednesday there have been no reports of injuries, but the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the labels come off more easily than intended and are a choking hazard.

Officials said the shoes affected are "Flexibles," sizes 2-10, with the blue Keds label on the heel. They sell for $30 a pair.

Keds said parents could return the shoes to the store where they were bought for a replacement pair or a refund. - Associated Press
