CRAIG HOLDS OFF HIGHLAND

Junior guard Kris Peters scored 20 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, as Craig County held off visiting Highland for a 77-65 victory in a Pioneer District boys' basketball game Wednesday night at New Castle.

Peters scored 12 points in the first half as the Rockets (9-11 overall, 3-8 district) took a 42-32 halftime lead. He also finished with five assists.

Trailing 55-48 after three quarters, Highland pulled to two points down in the fourth quarter, but Craig County tightened its defense and held on.

The Rams (2-16, 0-10) got 18 points from Chris Schill, 15 from John Hull and 13 each from Bradley Hull and Jamie Botkin.

Kevin Lucas added 17 points for Craig County, and Jeff Ford had 23 rebounds and nine points. \

Bland 63, Rocky Gap 57: At Rocky Gap, the Eagles (1-17, 1-16) led for most of the game, but the Rockets got a big boost from Kevin King and pulled out the Mountain Empire District victory.

Good shooting helped Rocky Gap take a 37-24 halftime lead, but the Eagles went cold and Bland went ahead to stay with about three minutes left.

King finished with 27 points, including 10 in the third quarter and eight in the fourth. Brad Harden and David Lambert added 10 points each.

For Rocky Gap, Eric Faulkner had 22 points and Richard Worley had 11.

\ Tuesday's games\ Dan River 64, Chatham 62: In Ringgold, Rod Davis scored the game-winning basket with 15 seconds left as the Wildcats sneaked past the Cavaliers for a Piedmont District boys' basketball victory Tuesday night.

Chatham had 22-point lead with 3:50 to go in the third quarter. Dennis Williams hit the only 3-pointer in the game to shift the momentum Dan River's way. The Wildcats went on to outscore the Cavaliers 21-7 in the fourth quarter. With 30 seconds left and the score tied at 62, Brian Gunn missed Dan River's last shot, but Rod Davis rebounded and hit a 10-foot jump shot.

Davis led all scorers with 18 points. Williams scored 16 points and Gunn had 14 for the Wildcats (5-15, 4-13).

Theo Jones led Chatham (7-12, 7-10) with 16 points. LaVelton Pope scored 13 and Ben Wright had 11. \

Martinsville 80, Magna Vista 72: Vincent Eggleston Mike Martin combined for 50 points as the Bulldogs rolled past the Warriors. Martinsville led 37-25 at halftime and coasted to the Piedmont District victory. Maurice Spencer paced the Bulldogs (15-4, 13-4) with 16 points. Tony Holmes and Marcus Toney scored 18 points each to lead Magna Vista (14-5, 13-4). Evan Penn added 14 and Rodney Redd had 11. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 70, Patrick County 54: In Stuart, the Cavaliers rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to blast the Cougars in Piedmont District play. Lemuel Jones scored 15 points and Ben Seay had 14 for the Cavaliers (14-5, 12-5), who outscored Patrick County 50-29 in the second half. Chris Reynolds scored 22 points and Jerome Hagwood and Richard Hagwood had 10 each for the Cougars (4-15, 2-15), who led 25-20 at halftime. \

Covington 71, Bath County 66: In Covington, the Cougars staved off a furious late rally by the Chargers to record the Pioneer District win.

Covington (10-8, 6-4) led by 10 points with less than three minutes to play, only to watch Bath County (9-11, 5-6) trim the deficit to 66-64 with 1:12 left. After Chuck Morris made it 67-64 with the first of two free throws, he missed the second, but teammate Van Wallace grabbed the rebound and scored, putting Covington up by five.

Wallace led Covington with 26 points, while Keeno Jones add 17. Matt Sherrard led Bath County with 18 points. \

Tunstall 84, Bassett 70: In Bassett, Hubert Atkins' 25 points paced five double-figure scorers for the Trojans in the Piedmont District game. Chris Walton added 21 points for Tunstall (11-9, 9-8). Art Wade had a game-high 32 points for Bassett (4-15, 4-13). \
