MAN GETS 6 YEARS FOR EMBEZZLEMENT

It was only after Bassett Print Corp. executives found out their comptroller, Harry George Sanders, was improperly charging gasoline to the company that they discovered Sanders was stealing more than gasoline.

Sanders, 46, was sentenced Wednesday to six years in prison and ordered to pay more than $340,000 in restitution for embezzling from his company, Henry County prosecutor Bob Bushnell said.

But it's unlikely Bassett Printing ever will recover the $346,352 Sanders was convicted of embezzling from 1986 to early 1992.

"I know the people at Bassett Printing are very much concerned about what happened to the money," Bushnell said.

Sanders was convicted of 13 counts of embezzlement. Covering his tracks by using two sets of company checks, Sanders took $5,000 from Bassett Printing each month for six years, Bushnell said.

Sanders then adjusted the company's books to make it appear that $5,000 worth of goods was missing from the company's inventory, Bushnell said.

"It would not surprise me if this man did not single-handedly steal more than every person I've prosecuted for larceny in the past three years," Bushnell said.
