CAVE SPRING BOYS TOPS IN RVD TRACK

The Cave Spring boys used their strength in distance running to win a three-way battle for the Roanoke Valley District indoor track championship Tuesday at Virginia Tech.

Jason Dowdy finished first in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. The Knights also had the second- and third-place finishers in the 3,200 and sixth place in the 1,600. Those points were enough to provide Cave Spring with a 7 1/2-point edge over William Fleming, which had only a fifth-place finish in the 3,200. Patrick Henry was 21 1/2 points back after getting only three of the 12 places in the distance runs.

The Knights' victory also featured Ronde and Tiki Barber, the Timesland boys' track athletes of the year last spring. Ronde Barber won the 300-meter dash, 55-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Tiki Barber won the 55-meter dash and the long jump. Both were on the Knights' winning 800-meter relay team.

William Fleming's Clyde Lewis also exceled. He won the high jump and won the 500-meter run in record time. He placed in the long jump and 300-meter dash and was a member of the 800-meter relay team that finished third.

Patrick Henry won the girls' meet with 171 1/2 points, followed by Cave Spring with 147 1/2. The Patriots won despite the absence of star athlete Arminta Crosby, who sat out the meet. She and William Fleming's Keyshia Anderson engaged in an altercation in a meet last week and had to sit out one meet under Virginia High School League rules. Crosby has qualified for next week's Northwestern Region in all of her events.

The Patriots' victory was paced by Deidre Trigg and Amy Speas. Trigg won the 55-meter hurdles and triple jump and was on the winning 800-meter relay team. Speas won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. \
