FERRUM WRAPS UP RACE FOR DIXIE
Ferrum, the defending Dixie Conference men's basketball champion and the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III South Region, clinched the league's regular-season title with a 94-83 win over Greensboro at Swartz Gymnasium on Wednesday night. The Panthers (18-5 overall, 9-1 league) get a bye in the conference tournament and will play the winner of the game between the fourth and fifth seeds on Feb. 26 at Christopher Newport.
Walter Webb, the league player of the week last week, led Ferrum with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
"Walter had an absolutely great game," Panthers coach Bill Pullen said. "We didn't play as well as I anticipated, but we were ready to play and we got it done.
"The ranking and playing for the conference [title] had to be in the back of our minds, but we tried to stay focused. This is a game we wanted."
The Monarchs (15-8, 6-3), the only Dixie team to beat Ferrum this season, led by three in the second half, but Webb got hot and Ferrum tightened up its defense to pull away.
Mike Robertson scored 14 points for Ferrum, John Breedlove had 13 and James Johnson and Quincy Quick scored 10 each.
Brad Apple led Greensboro with 26, and Kevin Beard added 19.
In Ferrum's loss at Greensboro, the Panthers missed 14 of 36 free throws. Wednesday night, Ferrum shot 20-for-26, while the Monarchs were 9-for-17.
