EX-TECH PROFESSOR JAMES SKIPPER DIES

Dr. James K. Skipper Jr., a former Virginia Tech sociology professor and author of a dozen books, died Monday at his home in Maryland. He was 58.

Skipper, who taught at Virginia Tech from 1976-1986, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Alpha Kappa Delta, international sociology honor society, which he served as president.

He moved to North Carolina in 1986 to head the sociology department of the University of North Carolina, where he worked until his retirement last year.

After that, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he finished writing his final book, "Baseball Nicknames, A Dictionary of Origins and Meanings." The book includes entries on more than 4,000 baseball players from 1871-1990.

A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday at the Virginia Tech Memorial Chapel. Rapp Funeral Home of Burtonsville, Md., is handling the arrangements.
