INDIANS CRUISE TO WIN OVER TAZEWELL 68-41

At Tazewell, Craig Turman's 3-pointer put Blacksburg ahead to stay in the first quarter, and the Indians cruised to a 68-41 non-district boys' victory over Tazewell on Wednesday night.

Tazewell led 10-8 near the end of the first quarter, then Turman sank a 3-pointer to make it 11-10 and the Indians did not trail again. Blacksburg led 32-24 at halftime and stretched the lead to 50-35 at the end of the third quarter.

Turman finished with 17 points, as did Jay Safford. Ben Araman added 15 points.

The Bulldogs (11-9) have lost nine of their past 11 games. \

Auburn 65, Giles 53: At Riner, Terry Millirons scored 17 points and Andy Johnson added 12 as the Eagles (13-7, 11-6) topped the Spartans in the Mountain Empire District.

For Giles, Marty Smith and Patrick Steele scored 12 points each.

The Spartans led 15-14 after the first quarter, but the Eagles exploded for 27 points in the second quarter to take a 41-34 halftime lead. \

Craig County 77, Highland 65: At New Castle, junior guard Kris Peters scored 20 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, as the Rockets held off the Rams for a 77-65 victory in a Pioneer District game.

Peters scored 12 points in the first half as the Rockets (9-11 overall, 3-8 district) took a 42-32 halftime lead. He also finished with five assists.

Trailing 55-48 after three quarters, Highland pulled to two points down in the fourth quarter, but Craig County tightened its defense and held on.

The Rams (2-16, 0-10) got 18 points from Chris Schill, 15 from John Hull and 13 each from Bradley Hull and Jamie Botkin.

Kevin Lucas added 17 points for Craig County, and Jeff Ford had 23 rebounds and nine points. \

Girls

Franklin County 44, Patrick Henry 39: Andrea Barnhart scored four points in the final minute to help the Eagles pull away from the host Patriots in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Patrick Henry (1-19, 0-12) led by two points with two minutes left in the game, but Lori Reynolds hit a 3-pointer to put the Eagles ahead for good.

Barnhart finished with 14 points and Reynolds had 13. The Patriots were led by Elisha Jones with 19 points. \

William Fleming 37, Pulaski County 24: At Dublin, William Fleming hit 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to secure a Roanoke Valley District win.

Marqueetta Randolph scored 12 points and Felicia Manns had 10 for the Colonels (12-6, 6-5).

Jodie Hallett led Pulaski County (12-8, 8-3) with 11 points. \
