Antique automobile club elects officers

The Roanoke Valley Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America recently elected and installed its 1993 officers.

Mike Gilmore was elected president. Other officers are: Jake Gilmore, vice president for activities; Bob Pedigo, vice president for membership; Barry Dooley, vice president for judging; Jerry Aker, treasurer; Dottie Slaydon, secretary; Peter Zorr, historian/photographer; and Jack Disher, immediate past president.

Norman Altizer, Moody DeVaux, and Bob Lemon were named to the the executive committee.

The club meets every third Friday (except February and December) at the Vinton War Memorial. Dinner, by reservation, is at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.

La Leche League has central phone number

The La Leche League of Roanoke, a group of trained volunteers offering breast-feeding education to mothers in the area, now has a telephone number - 989-5730.

The number will be published in the 1993-94 telephone directory.

League leaders are available by phone at any time to answer breast-feeding questions. They also have monthly meetings to give women a chance to meet others for mother-to-mother support and encouragement.

All leaders are trained and accredited by La Leche League International. There is no fee for the information they give.

TAP sponsors workshops on earned income credits

Total Action Against Poverty's Community Development and Outreach Program is sponsoring several Earned Income Credit workshops.

People who earned less than $22,370 from a job and had a child living with them for more than six months in 1992, may be eligible to receive up to $2,211 in tax credits.

The workshops will be held today at Forest Park Baptist Church, 812 29th St. N.W., from 10 a.m. to noon; and Roanoke City Council Chambers, 215 Church Ave. from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Other workshops will be held Feb. 25 at the Roanoke Academy of Math and Science, 1122 19th St. N.W., from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; and Feb. 26 at Jackson Middle School, 1022 9th St. S.E., from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Music professor picked to lead Shriners' band

Frank Williams has been elected director and J.R. "Ace" Wall has been re-elected manager of the Kazim Brass Band.

Williams, a high school band teacher for 32 years, is a professor of music at Roanoke College, where he also served as chairman of the fine arts department for 11 years. He has also conducted the Roanoke College Choir, the Roanoke Valley Chorus and the Virginia Choral Society. He is a former member of the Roanoke Symphony and several dance and jazz bands in the area.

Williams also is a member of Taylor Masonic Lodge No. 23, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Kazim Temple and the Roanoke Valley Shrine Club.

Wall is a retired Norfolk Southern employee, who has been the band's manager for 15 years.

Other band officers are: Danny Ryan, assistant band manager; Warren Orr, assistant band director; Wes Earnest, secretary-treasurer; Garrett Hudgins, Mike Campbell and Mickey Cundiff, quartermasters; and Bob McDaniel, librarian.

Rob Leftwich, Dave Waltz, Otey Warren and Henry Holliday were elected to the board of governors. Ralph Ruble and Max Leach are in charge of public relations.

Dan Higgins, former treasurer, received the Bandsman of the Year Award.

The Kazim Shrine bands include the Shrine Band, a concert and marching unit that participates in parades and fund-raisers for the crippled children's hospitals, and The Noblemen, an 18-piece dance orchestra. The Noblemen perform at various temple activities and fund-raisers.

Planned Parenthood re-elects president

Tyler Pugh, branch manager and senior vice president of Wheat First Securities, has been elected to a second term as president of the board of directors of Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge.

Other officers are: Al Knighton, vice president and legal counsel; Charlotte Porterfield, secretary; Ted Feinour, treasurer; and Kathy Oelschlager, assistant secretary.

New members elected to the board of directors are Betty Branch, Robert Edwards, Annie Harman, Moki Moffitt, Amy Reaves and Donna Sulkin.

Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge provides reproductive health care, education and advocacy services for Virginians through centers in Roanoke, Blacksburg and Charlottesville.

Northside High boosters selling fruit for band trip

The Northside High School Band Boosters is selling oranges and grapefruit to aise money for a band trip to Disney World.

Valencia oranges, and pink and white grapefruit will be sold. . The prices vary according to size. A box with 30 to 50 oranges, depending on size or a box of 12 to 15 grapefruit, depending on size, will cost $11.

A box with 60 to 100 oranges or 24 to 20 grapefruit cost $20.

All orders must be prepaid and placed by March 1. Checks should be payable to Northside Band Booster, c/o Don and Sue Higgins, 7204 Plantation Road, Roanoke, Va. 24019.
