MINORITY DIABETICS HAVE HIGHEST CHILDBIRTH RISK

The first federal study of births complicated by diabetes shows minorities are at highest risk because they don't get prenatal care to detect and control the disease, health officials reported Thursday.

The CDC studied 3.6 million birth certificates issued in 1989. For every 10,000 live births, 211 new mothers had diabetes.

The rate for white women was 207.4, compared with 218.2 for blacks, 225.6 for Hispanics, 221.2 for Asians and 448.1 for Indians. - Associated Press
