COMPANY DENIED VARIANCE FOR TOWER
The Roanoke County Board of Zoning Appeals has denied a variance for a cellular telephone company that wanted to erect a transmission tower on an undersized lot atop Buck Mountain. The denial does not kill the tower because the company, Cellular One, could conform with zoning regulations by leasing the mountaintop land or buying a larger lot.
The proposed 120-foot tower has drawn attention because it could conflict with Roanoke County's desire to preserve mountain vistas along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Cellular One now must obtain a special-use permit for the 120-foot tower. The Roanoke County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing March 2, and will forward its recommendation to the Board of Supervisors.
