CAVS PULL OFF SWEEP

The atmosphere at University Hall on Thursday night was exactly what Virginia basketball coach Jeff Jones wanted.

Even more to his liking was the outcome.

UVa became the first team since 1990 to sweep the season series against Duke when the Cavaliers upset the No. 7-ranked Blue Devils 58-55.

Sophomore point guard Cory Alexander made three free throws in the final 32 seconds and finished with a game-high 20 points as 24th-ranked UVa ran its record to 16-5 overall and 8-4 in the ACC.

Duke (19-5, 7-5) played without leading scorer Grant Hill, who remained in Durham, N.C., because of an injured toe, sprained Saturday in a 98-86 loss to Wake Forest.

Cherokee Parks led the Blue Devils with 16 points and Thomas Hill had 14. Point guard Bobby Hurley, played man-to-man by Alexander, was 3-of-11 shooting and finished with eight points.

The Blue Devils got a lift from freshman guard Doug Collins, who hit back-to-back 3-pointers and then gave Duke its last lead at 49-48 on a basket with 6:03 left.

The lead exchanged hands one more time before UVa sophomore Junior Burrough put the Cavaliers on top 52-51 with two free throws with 2:47 remaining.

It started a 6-0 run by UVa, which went ahead 56-51 on a Doug Smith free throw with 21 seconds left. After Hurley scored for Duke, Alexander's two free throws with 14 seconds left made it 58-53.

Parks dunked to cut the deficit to three, and the Blue Devils had a change to tie when Ted Jeffries threw away the inbounds pass, but Thomas Hill's desperation 3-point attempt fell far short at the buzzer.

In a first half marked by poor shooting by both teams, Alexander scored eight points over the final 3:55 and helped the Cavaliers take a 30-26 lead to the locker room.

Virginia, noticeably hyperactive in the game's opening minutes, committed turnovers on five of its first six possessions and fell behind 5-0 and 8-2.

However, when Duke's Tony Lang and Eric Meek each missed two-shot free-throw opportunities, UVa forced a 10-10 tie on Ted Jeffries' short jumper with 11:19 left.

UVa built its lead to 22-16 before the Blue Devils went on a 7-0 run that gave them a short-lived lead on a field goal by Cherokee Parks with 2:40 remaining.

An 8-1 Virginia run enabled the Cavaliers to match their biggest lead of the first half at 30-24 before Thomas Hill scored in the lane to end the first half.

Hill had 10 first-half points despite being knocked woozy when he ran into a Cornel Parker screen with 9:06 left. Referee Bobby Donato had to calm Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, who felt Parker was guilty of throwing an elbow.

Alexander was the high scorer for both teams in the first half with 12 points, all in the final 7:32. Alexander was 4-for-4 on free throws, and the other players - for both teams - were a combined 4-for-13.

Duke, which shot 36.8 percent in the first game, hit three of its last four shots in the first half to finish 10-of-31 (32.3 percent). Virginia was 13-of-32 (40.6 percent).
