ASIANS BECOME FASTEST-GROWING OF MINORITIES

Asian-Americans are the fastest growing minority group in the United States and will grow to 20 million, or more than 6 percent of the total population, by the year 2020, according to a study released Thursday.

The report, "The State of Asian Pacific America," was prepared by the Asian Pacific American Public Policy Institute, based in Los Angeles.

Asian-Americans now number about 7.3 million, or 3 percent of the population. They grew in number by 95 percent from 1980 to 1990, the report said, compared with 6 percent growth for whites, 13 percent for blacks and 53 percent for Hispanics.

The author of the report's segment on population, Prof. Paul Ong of UCLA, divided most Asian-Americans into six ethnic groups: Chinese, 23 percent; Filipino, 19 percent; Japanese, 12 percent; Indian and Korean, 11 percent each; and Vietnamese, 8 percent.
