RURAL RETREAT LOSES 69-52 IN BASKETBALL
Shannon Dawson had 22 points Thursday night as Pocahontas buried Rural Retreat 69-52 in a non-district boys' basketball game in Bluefield.Junior Fleming added 14 points and Jason Keaton 11 for Pocahontas (9-9), which pulled away by outscoring the visitors 27-16 in the fourth quarter.
Steven Pratt led Rural Retreat with 18 points. \
In games Wednesday night:
\ Northwood 67, Marion 61: At Marion, the Panthers took control with a 22-9 third quarter to defeat the Scarlet Hurricane in a non-district game. Northwood hit nine of 10 free throws in the third quarter and was 26-for-38 in the game. Marion was 9 of 18 from the line. John Griffin led Northwood with a game-high 23 points, Johnny Cregger added 17 and Neal Booth had 12. For Marion (8-12), Jason Lefler had 22 points and Brian Cregger had 14. \
William Byrd 88, Rockbridge County 47: Senior David Robertson got his 1,000 career point on his first basket as the Terriers romped past the visiting Wildcats in Blue Ridge District play. Robertson finished with 22 points and has 1,020 in his career. Reserves played well for Byrd (14-5, 6-3) with sophomore Kevin Tuck coming off the bench for 15 points. Kenny Lewis led Rockbridge with 13. \
