MEMORIAL SERVICE SATURDAY FOR JAMES KINLEY SKIPPER

A memorial service will be held at Virginia Tech's Memorial Chapel on Saturday for James Kinley Skipper, an internationally renowned professor of sociology who had worked at Tech for a decade.

A reception in honor of Skipper will be held immediately following the service at the Jamerson Athletic Center, Bowman Room, also on Tech's campus.

Skipper was at Tech, where he received a certificate of "Teaching Excellence," from 1976 to 1986

In recent years, he headed the department of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

He moved to the Washington, D.C., area in March 1992, where he finished writing the last of his dozen books.

His survivors include his sons, James K. Skipper III and John F. Skipper, both of Burtonsville, Md.; his daughter-in-law, Laurie M. Skipper, also of Burtonsville; and his brothers, Thomas L. Skipper of Oak Park, Ill. and John C. Skipper of Mason City, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the James Kinley SKipper Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, Alpha Kappa Delta, International Sociology Honor Society, in care of Alvin P. Short, secretary-treasurer, Department of Sociology, Southwest Texas State University, 601 University Dr., San Macos, Texas 78666-4616.
