Activist to speak

National gay- and lesbian-rights activist Kevin Berrill will be speaking twice in Western Virginia next week about strategies for countering hate crimes against homosexuals.

Berrill, former director of the National Gay/Lesbian Task Force Anti-Violence project, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Heth Student Center Ballroom at Radford University. Admission is free.

Friday, Berrill will conduct a workshop at the Roanoke Unitarian Universalist Church, Grandian Road and Brandon Avenue, from 7 until 10 p.m. A minimum donation of $3 will be sought from participants.

Berrill has testified before Congress and has been a frequent national media spokesperson on gay and lesbian issues.

Poet to read

Award-winning poet Kathryn Stripling Byer will read from her latest work, "Wildwood Flower," and conduct a poetry workshop Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26 and 27, at the Arts Depot in Abingdon.

Byer is poet-in-residence at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C.

Byer will read from her work at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 26. There is a $20 fee for the workshop Feb. 27 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. To register or receive more information, call 628-3760.
